Mann Makhene Machinery Services has built a vast knowledge base on different types of industrial pumps over many years.
We work on various industrial pumps, including centrifugal, axial, or positive displacement pumps. We specialise in pump services such as minor inspections, short-term and long-term overhauls, refurbishing, manufacturing, reverse engineering, pump removal, relocation, and installation, to name a few. We have successfully wholly refurbished many different brands of industrial pumps.
Industrial pumps are mechanical devices that are used to move liquids, gases, or other fluids. They are used in a wide range of industries, including oil and gas, manufacturing, construction, food processing, and water treatment.
Industrial pumps come in a variety of types, including centrifugal pumps, diaphragm pumps, gear pumps, and peristaltic pumps. Each type of pump has its own set of characteristics and is suited to different applications.
Factors to consider when selecting an industrial pump include the type of fluid being pumped, the required flow rate, the total head (pressure) required, and the system’s operating conditions.
We conduct major & minor overhauls on all types of industrial pumps, including common types used in mining and industrial applications. These include:
Positive Displacement Pumps
That work by moving fluid by repeatedly enclosing a fixed volume and moving it mechanically through the system.
Centrifugal Pumps
A mechanical device designed to move fluid using the transfer of rotational energy from one or more driven rotors, called impellers.
Axial-Flow Pumps
Also called propeller pumps, are centrifugal pumps which move fluid axially through an impeller.
Lobe Pumps
Positive-displacement type pumps that use two or more lobes rotating around parallel shafts in the pump’s body to move liquids.
Diaphragm Pumps
A positive displacement pump that uses a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or Teflon diaphragm and suitable valves on either side of the diaphragm to pump a fluid.
Gear Pumps
A type of positive displacement (PD) pump that moves a fluid by repeatedly enclosing a fixed volume using interlocking cogs or gears, transferring it mechanically using a cyclic pumping action.
Piston Pumps
A positive displacement pump where the high-pressure seal reciprocates with the piston. Piston pumps are commonly used to move liquids, but they can also be used to move gases and other fluids.
Pump Auxiliary Equipment
Auxiliary equipment for industrial pumps can include a variety of items that are used to support the operation of the pump. Some examples of pump auxiliary equipment include:
- Motor starters:
Used to start and stop the electric motor that powers the pump. - Control panels:
To control and monitor the operation of the pump. - Valves:
They control the flow of fluid through the pump. - Filters:
These are used to remove contaminants from the fluid being pumped.
- Pressure gauges:
Used to measure the pressure of the fluid being pumped. - Flow meters:
To measure the flow rate of the fluid being pumped. - Couplings:
Connect the pump to other equipment in the system. - Hoses:
These are used to transfer the fluid being pumped from one location to another.
The specific auxiliary equipment needed for a particular pump application will depend on the specific requirements of the system.

Common Types of Industrial Pumps
The common types of industrial pumps used in a mining environment include:
Dewatering Pumps
A centrifugal pump that is used to remove water.
Slurry Pumps
Designed for hydraulic conveyancing of abrasive and often corrosive solid particles within a carrier fluid.
Mill Circuit Slurry Pumps
Robust centrifugal pumps capable of handling tough and abrasive duties.
Tailings Management Pumps
To contain mine tailings and ensure their safe, long-term disposal.
Hydraulic Pumps
Use an electric motor to drive the pump, which converts electrical energy into fluid pressure.
